Affleck Who?

Get ready to swoon, Capitol Hill. Hollywood hunk and celebvocate Ben Affleck will testify before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday on the “evolving security situation” in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Affleck — who in 2009 founded the Eastern Congo Initiative, an advocacy group that seeks to provide funding to help the people of the Congo thrive — will testify before the committee at 10 a.m. in Rayburn 2118.

The “Argo” star and director will sit on a panel with two other experts. But who are we kidding? The throngs of interns and staffers lining up outside the hearing room will be there to catch a glimpse of the box-office draw.

Affleck has been vocal about his support for aiding the war-torn nation, which has seen violence escalate since rebels took control of Goma, a city on the border of Rwanda, at the end of November.

“The committee often hears from those outside of the defense community, in order to provide important perspectives on emerging issues,” said Robert McAlister, deputy spokesman for the committee, on the reason for Affleck’s appearance.
