Appropriations Chairman Piles On to Moran’s ‘Underpaid’ Remarks (Video)

Turns out not even the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee can avoid weighing in on whether members are “underpaid.

At an appropriations markup Wednesday, Rep. Harold Rogers, R-Ky., laid into Rep. James P. Moran, D-Va., after Moran’s amendment to raise each member’s pay by $2,800 was rejected by voice vote.

“I might with tongue and cheek say that this issue got a raise out of Mr. Moran,” the Kentucky Republican said.

The issue of member pay has created a rift on Capitol Hill of whether members are “underpaid” or out of touch.

Coats Wanders Into Wrong Committee Hearing (Video)

Have you ever ducked into a meeting you weren’t supposed to, or stepped into the wrong showing at a movie theater?  Sure you have.  But lucky for you, the mishap wasn’t captured on camera.

We can’t say the same for Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., who wandered into a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday and began asking the Treasury Department’s witness a series of questions before a staffer informed him he was in the wrong place.

“I just got a note saying I’m at the wrong hearing,” the Indiana Republican said. “I’ve got the right room number, but the wrong hearing. Well this is the first time this has ever happened to me.”

Coats, who responded to his recent ban from Russia with a top 10 list of things he would miss, quickly left the hearing after realizing his mistake.

“I’ll go try to find out where I’m supposed to be.”

HOH gives props to Coats and his staff for treating the situation with the appropriate levity.

Boehner Reminds Members to Dress Appropriately: ‘You Know Who You Are’ (Video)

Perhaps it was Rep. Jared Polis’ recent affinity for bow ties or Janet L. Yellen’s black-on-black threads, but Speaker John A. Boehner is not happy with members’ recent decorum on the House floor.

The Ohio Republican reminded members Tuesday of proper “parliamentary practice” before moving on to the House dress code.

“Members should wear appropriate business attire during all sittings of the House, however brief their appearance on the floor might be, and you know who you are,” Boehner said. “The chair appreciates the attention of all the members to these matters.”

Although not the first time he has chided members about dressing appropriately, it has been more than six months since Rep. Howard Coble rocked a green madras sport coat, more than eight months since Rep. Mark Sanford’s sweat-soaked T-shirt incident and more than two years since this:

That’s Mr. Boner to You (Video)

One day after Speaker John A. Boehner was complimented on his tan, the Ohio Republican again found himself joshing with reporters Thursday.

After a reporter incorrectly addressed him as “Mr. Camp,” referring to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp and his tax code rewrite, Boehner responded with a candid, “It’s Boner.”

Reporter to Boehner: Nice Tan, Sir (Video)

Speaker John A. Boehner has a special affinity for poking fun at reporters’ sartorial decisions. But on Wednesday, it was Boehner who found himself on the butt end of a joke.

The Ohio Republican began his question and answer session Wednesday morning with some classic schoolyard sarcasm regarding Bloomberg reporter Derek Wallbank’s decision to wear a light purple button-down Wednesday.

“Nice shirt,” the Speaker said.

Wallbank took the comment — or at least tried to take the comment — as a compliment.

“Thank you, sir,” he said. Full story
