Capitol Police, Santa To Throw D.C. Kids a Holiday Party

December is proving to be an exciting month for the kids at Savoy Elementary School in Southeast Washington.

Earlier this month, the kids got to take a music class with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Damien Woetzel, a former dancer with the New York City Ballet. As cool as that was, 60 Savoy students might be a smidge more excited about what’s coming on Wednesday.

Santa Claus is coming to town, especially to meet and greet them at the 13th annual United States Capitol Police holiday party for the students.

Before 10 a.m., the USCP will pick up the kids — “We will have a mini-motorcade,” says Capitol Police Public Information Officer Shennell Antrobus — and shuttle them to the Senate side of the Capitol.

And whom will they meet when they get there? Why, Santa of course, who will greet them at the entrance of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, hopefully with a “Ho, ho, ho!” Capitol Police officers volunteer time to plan the party and donate unwrapped toys. Each child who attends the party — scheduled to pop off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in SD-G50 — will receive a gift, which might make sitting through any speeches from public officials easier to bear.
