Celebrities by Default

Nearly a dozen Congressional types, lawmakers and all manner of political flunkies, are being feted in the February issue of Washington Life magazine — regardless of whether they like it/know it.

The soiree-obsessed publication tapped 250-plus locals for its seventh annual “The Young and the Guest List” issue, a wide-ranging roster that includes: Moira Bagley, communications director for Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.); Brad Dayspring, spokesman-cum-deputy chief of staff for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.); Becca Glover Watkins, press secretary for House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.); Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.); Paul Lindsay, communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee; Rep. Ben Quayle (R-Ariz.); Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.); Alex Skatell, media director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee; Michael Steel, press secretary for Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio); and Amelia Wang, chief of staff for Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.).

And just what did these regional rock stars actually do to deserve the recognition?

Survey says:

A) Live in our general area, and

B) Happen to be younger than 40.

“Most of these people no one knows personally. It’s just through research,” a Washington Life aide said of the largely arbitrary accolade. The aide noted that because the magazine’s core readership is primarily retiree socialites, it is totally conceivable that the current crop of honorees is completely oblivious to being co-opted.

“We don’t clear it with them before we put them on there,” the aide admitted.

To wit, at least one of this year’s class was blindsided by the involuntary name-dropping. “I don’t know how I ended up there,” our stupefied source said.

Meritorious or not, three-peater Glover Watkins (she’s been a list standby since 2010) loves it. “It helps snag a reservation at a heavily booked restaurant!” she gushed.
