Congressional ‘Chefs’ Ready Recipes for Gourmet Gala
Posted at 3:35 p.m. on April 25
With the 32nd Annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala just days away, congressional tastemakers are dusting off old favorites and whipping up new temptations with which to woo support for charity cook-off bragging rights.
The epic fundraiser (individual tickets start at $1,500 per person) is scheduled to take place May 7 beginning at 6 p.m. at the National Building Museum (440 G St. NW).
Organizers have opted to embrace a state fair theme for the glitzy dine-around, and more than three dozen House and Senate lawmakers have accepted the challenge to create a hopefully noteworthy nibble.
In keeping with tradition, the Capitol Hill “chefs” will be vying for a handful of honors, including: Best Presentation, Health and Happiness, American Regional Cuisine, Easiest Preparation, Best in Show and the People’s Choice Award.
Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., Rep. K. Michael Conaway, R-Texas, Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, D-Texas, claimed the respective crowns in 2013.
But they face stiff competition from several returning champs.
According to a gala aide, Idaho Republican Sen. Jim Risch has won the most awards (three) to date; he’s bringing Idaho Potato Lollipops to the table this year. Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., is tied with Hinojosa and Lamborn at two lifetime wins apiece — though one of those victories was the coveted People’s Choice nod.
And then there are the seasoned veterans.
The charity aide said Reps. Robert B. Aderholt, R-Ala., and John D. Dingell, D-Mich., have been mixing it up with gala-goers for over a decade. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kans., has been at it nearly as long; he’s only missed out on one get-together (2010) since 2004.
Guess we’ll see if Dingell gets a sympathetic send-off. The retiring pol is sticking with the same cherry meatballs he dished at last year’s shindig.
