Debbie Wasserman Schultz Hints About Softball Recruitment

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., tipped her hand Monday about her plans for the next Congress.

For softball, that is.

The Democratic National Committee chairwoman, who does triple duty as a co-captain of the Congressional Women’s Softball team, tweeted out the names of several new female Members-elect, along with her fellow co-captains — Sens. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo.

Roll Call extensively reported on this matter in the lead up to Election Day. The bipartisan member team plays a squad of female Capitol Hill reporters each summer in an annual grudge match. Recruitment is crucial for the member team, especially because it lost in front of a crowd of about 1,000 spectators this past June.

Reporting shows that three of the four possible recruits named, Sen.-elect Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., Rep.-elect Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, and Rep.-elect Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., have strong athletic backgrounds.

The one who escaped previous notice is Sen.-elect Deb Fischer, R-Neb. A Cornhusker State source emailed, “She is ferocious competitor. Be very afraid.”

When asked if her tweet was an official confirmation of 2013 recruits, Wasserman Schultz tweeted:
