Democrats Roast Ann Richards’ Granddaughter, Set Political Bar High

Democratic operatives all over town had a ball Friday afternoon ribbing their colleague, Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Lily Adams, after the 27-year-old was declared the future of the Texas Democratic Party on cable news.

It all started Friday morning, when MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown” featured a segment on political up-and-comers in the Lone Star State.

Dallas Morning News reporter Wayne Slater prognosticated that Adams will likely be a future occupant of the Texas governor’s mansion, her late grandmother Ann Richards’ former crib.

“This is the one that’s just going to cause waves today,” Slater foreshadowed. “She is extraordinary. She is bright.”

“She ain’t going to run for anything in the near future but if I had a dollar, I’d say Lily Adams, if she comes back to Texas and runs, will be the governor of Texas in 15 years,” he declared.

Sources on Ivy Street say the mention blindsided a mortified Adams.

“She’s been beet-red all day,” a national Democratic operative said. “She’s the last person who’d want any of this attention, but she deserves the acknowledgment that she’s earned.”

That didn’t stop her colleagues and pals from ribbing her on Twitter. Her boss, DNC Communications Director Mo Elleithee, went so far as to tweet a Photoshopped campaign logo:

The joke went viral by the afternoon, thanks in part to the hashtags #LilyMania and #ReadyForLily. EMILY’s List spokeswoman Marcy Stech was on the case. Is there such a thing as “EMILY’s Waiting List”?

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also weighed in:

Adams will just barely be eligible to run for Senate in 2018 based on minimum age requirements.

“When I think of the future of the party, I think of her,” Elleithee said in an interview with CQ Roll Call. “I’ve known for a long time and felt that one day we’d eventually all be working for her.”

“But now that we’ve given her her credit, can we leave her alone so she can just get back to work?”
