Fare Thee Well, Fun Hoosiers

Sen. Dick Lugar wasn’t the only Republican candidate to lose a primary race in Indiana this week.

When all the votes were counted in the GOP primary for Indiana’s 5th district race, two of HOH’s favorite candidates came out on the short end: third-place finisher John McGoff and fourth-place finisher Wayne Seybold.

McGoff and his communications director, Brian Jessen, set new records for pummeling email inboxes. We were particularly pleased with McGoff’s commitment to not commit to anti-tax pledges, a shot across the bow of another HOH favorite, Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist.

Late in the race, however, McGoff touted his proudest endorsement: his wife, Karen McGoff. That’s correct — on May 1, Mrs. McGoff publicly threw her support behind her husband in a political TV ad.

“Mrs. McGoff touts Dr. McGoff’s qualifications for Congress as a brigadier general and an emergency physician but demonstrates that she is still the head of the household,” McGoff’s campaign said in a statement.

“I am proud to have my wife’s support in my quest to become Indiana 5th’s next Congressman,” the humbled candidate said. “She has demonstrated unwavering support and dedication not only to my campaign, but also throughout my life.”

We at HOH sincerely hope this leads to more spousal endorsements for Congressional candidates. The public has a right to know!

HOH also regrets that Seybold, the mayor of Marion, is skating out of our life. Seybold is a former pairs figure skater. He and his sister, Natalie, competed in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

HOH will miss Seybold’s political ads, in which he demonstrates his skating chops. The mayor takes to the streets, in-line skating his way through Marion.

“We have jobs!” he says enthusiastically, moving gracefully through the town’s empty streets.
