Georgetowners Toasting JFK in Neighborhood Tribute

Capitol Hill veteran-turned-lobbyist Bill Broydrick on Friday is following in President John F. Kennedy’s historic footsteps, rounding up those who share a postal code with the late Massachusetts Democrat for a commemorative drink.

“My wife Cindi and I live on the same block as President Kennedy did when he was elected President,” Broydrick told HOH in an email, putting himself in the proximity of the love nest JFK and Jackie shared at 3307 N. St. NW during his 1960 campaign. “We have invited all of our neighbors to share a drink and toast to JFK at Martin’s Tavern where JFK asked Jackie to marry him.”

Per Broydrick, this is the first time he’s attempted to orchestrate such a pilgrimage; just more than a dozen neighbors — including the folks currently residing in the old Kennedy roost — have agreed to make the trek.

After wrapping at Martin’s, the group is expected to retire to Chez Broydrick for dinner and a recollection of how the events of Nov. 22, 1963, unfolded at the White House from Mary White, who served as personal assistant to the late Ted Sorenson, the Kennedy speechwriter and confidant. White, who has been making the anniversary rounds this year, apparently lives right around the corner from Broydrick.

No word on whether any of the current residents of that slice of Georgetown actually knew the Kennedys while they lived there. Broydrick sure didn’t — since he was just one of many schoolboys left shell-shocked by Kennedy’s slaying.

“I was 15 and I remember my favorite teacher in high school sitting on the floor and cursing and crying at the same time,” he said of the impact the shooting had in Boston.
