John Lewis’ Politics and Prose

Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis will read excerpts from his latest book at 7:30 p.m. at Politics and Prose.
In his latest memoir, “Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change,” Lewis reflects on his career, from the his days with the civil rights movement to his current job in Congress. He hopes the book will provide guidance to “anyone seeking to live virtuously and transform the world.
“The most important lesson I have learned in the fifty years I have spent working toward the building of a better world is that the true work of social transformation starts within,” he writes. “It begins inside your own heart and mind, because the battleground of human transformation is really, more than any other thing, the struggle within the human consciousness to believe and accept what is true.
“Thus to truly revolutionize our society, we must first revolutionize ourselves. We must be the change we seek if we are to effectively demand transformation from others,” Lewis says, sounding just little bit like Mahatma Gandhi.
