GOP Sens. John Cornyn (Texas) and Chuck Grassley (Iowa) put their money where their mouths are Monday, stuffing themselves and staff with barbecue cow and pig from Hill Country BBQ in celebration of the first-ever “Meat Monday.”
The Senators hosted the flesh-filled lunch party in defiance of the Agriculture Department’s short-lived flirtation with the “Meatless Monday” movement. Cornyn’s office confirmed they picked up 52 orders of food from the Texas-themed eatery (Hill Country is based in New York City), including beef brisket and Kreuz sausages.
“In some of the toughest times they’ve seen in recent memory, Texas cattle ranchers and farmers deserve an Administration who works with them, not one who undermines them with boneheaded decisions from bureaucrats in Washington,” Cornyn stated in a release. Not sure how the lunch party helped Texans, considering Hill Country is supplied by New York meatpacker Pat LaFrieda. According to a 2010 New York magazine article, LaFrieda gets the brunt of his beef from Creekstone Farms in Kansas.
