Mr. Polis Goes to Reddit

According to Reddit, Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) keeps bees, collects coins and reads tarot cards, but he will not be punching Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas).

This week, Polis took to the social media distribution community to urge users to support him in the annual Member Online All-Star Competition.

The winner will have “the most new facebook likes and twitter followers over the next week (before Friday 7/27). So if u wanna help me and give me more internet glory and karma among members of Congress, please upvote this post and most importantly like my facebook page and follow my twitter @jaredpolis,” Polis wrote.

He also said he would be happy to answer any questions people might have.

“Can you punch Lamar Smith in the d*** for me? Sincerely, A Texan and internet user,” one user wrote to Polis, before adding. “Thanks for your work in trying to not destroy the internet.”

Smith, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, is a sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act, which has attracted the ire of online activists. Earlier this year, donors to the Reddit-based Test PAC made Smith their prime nemesis.

“He’s actually a really nice gentleman,” Polis responded, rising to the defense of his Republican colleague. “He was at a recent Nationals Game that I threw out the first pitch, and he texted me and said good job. That doesn’t mean, of course, I agree with him on much of anything relating to the internet or immigration.

“[T]he biggest surprise was that he texts! :-),” he continued.

“Fair enough,” the Texan Internet user responded, asking that Polis perform the act on Smith “metaphorically then on policy matters.”

Another user created a fake job that would perform the act. Another replied within a couple of comments that the job would be outsourced to India.
