Savoring Horton’s Makeover Replay

The do-gooders behind Ward 8 nonprofit Horton’s Kids were thrilled to be featured on last week’s episode of “Restaurant: Impossible,” but they suspect many of their most dedicated supporters were too busy working to catch the original showing (June 13).

So the group is hosting an invite-only viewing party tonight at the swanky Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center (901 K St. NW) for friends, co-workers and associated pols. A Horton’s aide told HOH that Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.) and Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Washington D.C. Ward 5 Councilman Vincent Orange are all expected to attend.

For those not up on the reality makeover show genre, host Robert Irvine travels from restaurant to restaurant, putting things right that once went wrong. No, wait. That was “Quantum Leap.”

Irvine’s show is all about refurbishing, and often salvaging, restaurants desperately in need of some major TLC. Horton’s got the nod after first lady Michelle Obama recruited Irvine to help her help the kid-friendly group get its house in order.

“Restaurant: Impossible” typically kicks in around $10,000 per project and spends two days smoothing out all the rough edges.

A Horton’s aide said their situation was so dire that Home Depot and Microsoft contributed around $150,000 extra to facilitate the full-scale face-lift. And FLOTUS continued her “Let’s Move!” push by overseeing the planting of an organic garden.

Want to get involved?

Horton’s will welcome the next crop of new volunteers during back-to-back orientation sessions Aug. 20-21, scheduled to take place in the Rayburn House Office Building.
