Senate GOP Goes Full Shutterbug

As part of their latest attempt at social media supremacy, Senate Republicans broke the seal on a new Instagram account — with a haunting snapshot of the eerily vacant Capitol.

“It was fitting to have our first shot be taken from the Senate side of the Capitol,” Senate Republican Conference spokeswoman AshLee Strong told HOH.

Within hours of posting the sepia-filtered image of the empty, yawning corridor, the GOP account already had scores of followers on the popular mobile photo-sharing site.

“It’s been a fairly easy process,” Strong said.

Soon, a second endeavor surfaced: This one, a photo of a staffer’s hand. In it, a white iPhone with the RSC app open.

Since assuming the conference chairmanship in January 2012, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota has made digital outreach a top priority, Strong asserted in an email.

“As online avenues emerge, we’re continually trying to reach as large an audience as possible,” Strong said. “This is just another way we can do that.”

The SRC has acquired a sizable following on popular social media platforms. As of Feb. 22, the @Senate_GOP Twitter account had more than 90,000 followers and the official Facebook page had amassed more than 1,000 “likes.” Both pages directed followers to the new Instagram account after its creation.

“We saw it as an opportunity recently and acted quickly to make it happen,” Strong said.

Constituents, other staffers, reporters and anyone else in the SRC’s Instagram audience can expect to see Republican senators and scenes from around the Capitol on what Strong said would be a diverse feed run by dedicated conference staffers.
