The Chair Recognizes: The Candyman

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) is obviously a student of the “you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar” school of thought. And he put that philosophy into practice last week by slippingĀ House Foreign Affairs Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) a little something sweet that’s temporarily paved over their political differences.

Ros-Lehtinen let the cat out of the bag during a hearing this morning when she acknowledged Connolly as her “platonic Valentine.”

And just how did Connolly ingratiate himself to the gentlelady from across the aisle?

Chocolate.

A Connolly aide said the bipartisan love affair commenced last week when Connolly, looking to score an extra minute of speaking time, slid Ros-Lehtinen a morsel of chocolate. The Congresswoman purportedly accepted the bite-sized bribe and yielded the extra minute, but non-chalantly announced the very next day that she preferred dark chocolate.

His marching orders now clearly defined, Connolly responded in kind shortly thereafter by sending Ros-Lehtinen two bags of Lindt dark chocolate truffles and an assortment of dark chocolaty goodies from Godiva.

Well played, sir.
