Valentine’s Day Serves Up the Washington Snark

One of HOH’s favorite holidays is Valentine’s Day, where jokes and politics get slathered with love puns and innuendo.

Everyone from the campaign committees to snarky communications shops gets in on the act, reprising their grade-school duties of sending valentines to everyone in the class, particularly their adversaries.

The Republican National Committee normally leads the pack, but this year it must have switched writers. Either that, or it just sort of phoned it in. Among its correspondence, though, we did have a favorite: a sad President Barack Obama looking down with the text: “I asked China to buy you this valentine.”

Still, we can all agree that this is kind of weak. We’ll expect more from the RNC next year.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee seemed to kick it up a notch with its smart-aleck cards. The one that made us snort was from House Republicans pledging to remain faithful to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., regardless of “his drinking problem.”

We do admit we have a bias toward “Airplane!” references, combined with the story that won’t die: His sip of Poland Spring bottled water during his response to the State of the Union the other night.

Funny or Die has a whole line of presidential candidate cards. And while we think the Republican presidential field from last year is truly the gift that keeps on giving to comedians, it’s former GOP nominee Mitt Romney who still comes out on top. Our favorites from FoD: cards from Romney with “I’ll still be here when the man you really love never shows” and “I’m looking for someone to love fire.”
